Welcome

From raw wood to a concert instrument: the building process

My work follows the classical tradition, with a focus on maximum resonance and tonal clarity.

The construction of a classical guitar begins long before the first cut is made. It starts with the selection of the wood, which has often been seasoned for a decade or more to develop the necessary stability and optimal resonance. In my workshop, I devote most of my time to building new instruments that meet the highest standards in terms of sound, playability and aesthetics.

For the gluing, I use hide and bone glue in accordance with centuries-old tradition. The wafer-thin, wax-free shellac finish not only protects the wood but also allows the top to vibrate freely – ensuring a quick response and a rich spectrum of overtones.

My understanding of aesthetics and inner perfection was documented in the renowned specialist magazine ‘Orfeo’ by Alberto Martinez (issue: Guitar Making in Switzerland).

Please visit me at my home studio at Olivenweg 34, 3018 Bern. In this peaceful setting, you’ll have the opportunity to try out my latest instruments at your leisure.

Are you looking for a bespoke instrument, made from woods of your choice and tailored to your ergonomics? I would be delighted to bring your wishes to life in a custom-made instrument.

Please do let me know in advance by phone or email. This will ensure that I can set aside enough time for you.

Sound

General comments on the recordings

No recording can faithfully reproduce the sound of a musical instrument. However, it can at least give you an idea of the real instrument. I use two AKG C 460 B/CK 61 uls microphones.

I also recommend using good headphones or a good stereo system to evaluate the sound.

About me

Until 2017, I built archtop guitars in my free time.

From 2017 onwards I was able to work with the master guitar maker Tobias Braun to learn the traditional technique of classical guitar making.

In the summer of 2018, I became self-employed.
